The National Centre of Audiovisual Media and Communication, dedicated to supporting audiovisual production, promoting audiovisual education, and preserving audiovisual heritage, assigns a high priority to further encouraging the discourse on media literacy that spans borders and transcends cultural boundaries. In today’s rapidly changing world, media education is essential for advancing ideas and contributing to digital literacy, informed citizenship, social cohesion, intercultural understanding, and democratic dialogue.
As part of its collaboration with UNESCO MIL Alliance, EKOME coordinates its Europe Sub-Chapter Mediterranean Group. This initiative aims to promote the objectives of UNESCO MIL Alliance and enhance Media and Information Literacy education in the wider Mediterranean region and Southern Europe. Through a joint strategy with Mediterranean countries, EKOME seeks to position Greece and the broader Mediterranean region as dynamic players in the global landscape of audiovisual education and digital communication.
EKOME has issued a call to all members of the Europe Sub-Chapter Mediterranean Group, as well as to active and experienced media, digital, and education experts, researchers, and practitioners, to contribute articles on media literacy issues, actions, policies, conditions, and reflections in the modern era.
The contribution of prominent academics, researchers, and media literacy experts from Greece, Guatemala, Brazil, and Lithuania has resulted in the compilation of a volume entitled “Adapting to the Changing Tides: Media & Information Literacy New Trends and Challenges,” edited by Kostas Karpouzis, Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication, Media, and Culture, Panteion University. The e-book by iDea EKOME Publications series is freely available online.
The articles of the volume explore the multifaceted aspects of contemporary media and information literacy, including the dissemination and accessibility of film education, digital citizenship related to social justice issues, the educational role of television, post-COVID media challenges, and cyber dangers. A common theme across all chapters is the emergence of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) as a fundamental human right. The ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create information is vital for free expression, informed citizenship, and personal empowerment. Acknowledging MIL as a human right compels governments, educational institutions, and society to ensure that everyone can develop these skills, fostering an informed and media-literate community.
May this volume provide a foundation for critical thinking and inspire meaningful dialogue and advancement, enabling organizations and individuals to adapt to the continuously evolving media landscape.
