In 2020, EKOME launched the creation of a series of publications that will include monographs, volumes, articles, educational guides, etc., on subjects from its three pillars. These publications are either in electronic format (e-books), edited and designed by staff members of EKOME, or in printed format, in cooperation with Sakkula Publications.

 

“Adapting to the Changing Tides: Media & Information Literacy New Trends and Challenges”

In the framework of its collaboration with UNESCO MIL Alliance and as coordinator of its Europe Sub-Chapter Mediterranean Group of the transnational Alliance that enhances Media and Information Literacy, EKOME undertook the initiative of compiling and publishing the digital volume “Adapting to the Changing Tides: Media & Information Literacy New Trends and Challenges”. Distinguished academics, researchers and media literacy, digital technology, and education experts from Greece, Guatemala, Brazil and Lithuania have contributed to this edition. The e-book was scientifically edited by Kostas Karpouzis, Assistant Professor at the Department of Communication, Media and Culture, Panteion University, and is published by EKOME’s iDea Publications series.

The articles explore the multifaceted aspects of contemporary media and information literacy, including the dissemination and accessibility of film education, digital citizenship related to social justice issues, the educational role of television, post-COVID media challenges, and cyber dangers. A common theme across all chapters is the emergence of Media and Information Literacy as a fundamental human right.

“Are you in (the Media)?”: new interactive educational tool by EKOME

The interactive educational tool Are you in (the Media)?, which consists of an online quiz and an educational study guide, addressed to high school students. The online quiz covers a wide range of topics – from aesthetics and ideology to technology, language codes, production, distribution, reception and internet security. While the quiz provides a starting point for assessing media knowledge, the study guide provides a more comprehensive and analytical approach on MIL. With explanatory comments on the answers of the quiz, informative texts, suggested learning activities and online links to relevant content and to digital tools, it aims not only to disseminate basic knowledge, but also to develop competent digital and media skills.

“Cin(e)inclusion in the classroom”: a study guide

The Study Guide Cin(e)inclusion in the classroom of the documentary One School, Two Worlds, which was created in the framework of Chania Festival’s educational programmes. Following EKOME’s initiative and support, the film was made accessible, with SDH and AD for the hearing and visually impaired. The workshops explore ways of approaching cinema in an inclusive way and aim to raise awareness on film experience of people with disabilities, to familiarise the participants with cinematic accessibility tools, to practice techniques and actions of inclusive film literacy for children with or without sensory problems..

"Utilization of audiovisual media in modern school"

The guide Utilization of audiovisual media in modern school actively supports teachers in the implementation of audiovisual education activities in their classrooms. The necessity of implementing such actions is increasingly highlighted by the teachers themselves and by the international literature. Mainly because in the new digital world, the relationship between students and audiovisual media starts at increasingly younger ages and, regardless of the extent to which it is mediated by the school, it is not just a passive relationship, but a combination of many factors, social, cognitive and psychological. The Guide is the result of a long process in which teacher training and the collection of feedback from practical implementation have been combined with academic reflection.

"The Lesson... Game!": an educational guide

The educational guide The Lesson… Game! accompanies the International Student Competition for Board and Digital Games Design, organised annually by EKOME since 2020.Teachers, students, parents, as well as all interested parties have free access to this volume, so that they can use it according to their needs, judgment, or simply their mood.

“Meet Our Members”: e-booklet of Europe Sub-Chapter Mediterranean Group for UNESCO MIL Alliance

The Guide “Meet Our Members” (e-booklet) introduce the members of Europe Sub-Chapter Mediterranean Group for UNESCO MIL Alliance. The Guide, edited and published by EKOME, contains a brief description of each member, their main actions on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) and contact information.

Europe Sub-Chapter Mediterranean Group of UNESCO Media & Information Literacy Alliance, coordinated by EKOME since 2018, was enlarged during 2021 with 17 new members from the Mediterranean region. New members come from academia, regulatory authorities, media organizations, and the creative industry covering a diverse and interdisciplinary approach on MIL. The aim of the Med Group is to promote and highlight Media and Information Literacy through joint actions and synergies that enable policies and practices in the field. It is based upon 5 Task Forces: a) synergies, b) research, c) policies, d) Creative Industries, e) typical education.

The name of iDea Publications refers to the initial letters of the three English words INVEST-DIGITIZE-EDUCATE, which together with the initial letter of the word AUDIOVISUAL form the English acronym of the Greek word IDEA.
